MY MOM + NEW LAPTOP = HEADACHE

When I was a guest poster over at Roni's blog "Stacy Family In Dallas," I wrote this story about my mom getting a new laptop. I thought it was funny, so I thought I'd share it with you guys too!!

Here ya go:

My grandma and a couple of my aunts pitched in to get my mom a laptop for her birthday. My mom recently got laid off from her job, and without a computer at home, it can be very inconvenient to have to go to the library to use one. Especially looking for a new job..it's just hard!

Anyway, they had it sent here because they knew I would be able to get it started for her, and help her out with the basic functions. My mom was super excited to come over the next day and try it out!

But, before she came, I had to pray and ask the Lord to PLEASE give me the patience to show her how to use it because..uh..how do I say this nicely...things can just go right over her head sometimes. You get what I'm saying?

Anywho..I showed her how to turn on the laptop, open the DVD drive, bookmark pages, shut it down..you know...all the basic knowledge she needs to have. I felt pretty confident that she could handle it from there! I think she was mostly excited that she could play CD's and DVD's on it! LOL!

She ends up calling me about 30 minutes later, after she gets home, and we were back at square one.

I want to share some of the questions she was asking me. It's hilarious now just thinking of it, but not at the time!

I'm not making any of this up..I promise you! Here goes...

"I just talked to Auntie Ofelia (her sister), and she was wondering how I could watch a DVD if I didn't have internet service yet?"

"The DVD player isn't working. Am I supposed to turn the computer on for it to work?"

"Do I need Wi-Fi to watch a DVD?"

"It doesn't have a handle?"

"Does it have Ebay?"

"You mean, I can bring this to the library and use it there?"

"Do I have to stand in the kitchen while I'm using this?"

There was probably more, but those are the ones that stick out the most. I don't even want to tell you what my answers were to her because then you would think I was very rude..LOL!

She started getting frustrated and said, "I'm just going to turn this off. I'm scared I'm going to break it. How do I do that again?"

Gotta love her!

Oh..and just an update. She is very comfortable with her laptop now, and she also visits my blog everyday! HI MOM!

LOL! I think everyone with mothers born during the "low tech" years can totally relate!

Too funny. Reminds me of my FIL (who used to captain submarines) asking me how to move the tool bar from the side to the bottom of the screen. I would tell him to click and drag the mouse. He had no idea! I think I'll be the same way since technology changes so fast these days and my kids will just laugh at me too.

That's funny! My parents call with techy questions sometimes, but for my hubby cuz I am not the best as answering them! Glad to hear she has gotten the hang of it!!

My mom is forever calling me with her computer issues and here's the thing, my brother is an IT guy, knows computers inside and out but does she call him, no. So I have to sit there and try and figure out what she is talking about. My mom is Japanese and speaks English but she still has an accent so even though she is MY mom sometimes I can't make out the word she is trying to say and I end up getting frustrated and telling her "I don't know, call Jaime, he will know". I feel bad that I am not able to help her though :o(

Your mom is too cute!! I guess we just take for granted all the simple things we know about computers.

Hello to your Mom!

She is doing a good job to get into this computer world. Many mothers would just rather skip it.

I have been told..."Lights on, but no one's home" about my own wacky ways of thinking.

♥ to your mom!

Hope

You are a good daughter for not hanging up on her!! Glad she has it all figured out now. My mom on the other hand has the computer all figured out but DO NOT leave her a voice mail on her cell phone, she has no idea how to listen to it :)

Are you sure we don't have the same mom? LOL We don't because my mom still hasn't figured her desktop out. Everytime I go home, she begs me to work on her computer to get it "straighened out." In the beginning, I told her she would just have to play around a bit to really understand it (after I taught her the basics). Boy, I should have never said that! I have sat on the phone directing her as if I worked for customer service and she can't even find the stuff I tell her to look for on the screen.

Your mom is far, far, far ahead of where my mom is. She has a computer but it took her 8 years to finally figure out how to work email in the most basic of ways.

We don't dare push beyond that.

That is funny. My mom would probably say the same kind of things. I bet it is just their generation. She'll get used to using that computer soon enough.

Oh my...I think I would have been slightly impatient in that situation! LOL!

She sounds like my inlaws. My husband is constantly running over there to "fix" something that doesn't work. My favorite is when my FiL forgets how to print:-)

Too funny! I'm just waiting for the day when my kids think I'm totally technologically challenged. I can't even imagine what is in store for us!
