Writer's Workshop {Road Trip}

A Vacation to Remember...

1987

I wish back then I had a camera, or even documented our road trip we took with my grandparents. I was 17 years old at the time, and my grandparents decided to DRIVE from Virginia to California to pick up my sister and I. The reason they drove? My grandma did not like to fly.

After a week or so of them spending time in CA, me, my sister (who is two years older), and my grandparents got in their VW van and headed back east to Virginia! We drove through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, and then stopped in Illinois for a few days to spend time with my aunt, and to also pick up our cousins! We continued on to Indiana, Ohio, got a flat tire in West Virginia, and finally made our way to Norfolk!

The funnest parts of that road trip was staying at a hotel each night, having endless amounts of snacks, buying postcards in each state, me and my sister making fun of my grandparents snoring, and my grandpa letting me drive even though I didn't have a license yet! Besides him, I was the only one who knew how to drive a stick shift! Go, me!

And, after being in Virginia for most of the summer, I came back to California saying, "Ya'll" to all my friends!

What a fun trip! My hubby wants to drive across the county for vacation one year! I told him the kiddos have to be well potty trained before we try something like that:)

I imagine that would have been the road trip of a life time. And one loooing road trip at that. What memories(and laughs) for you all to share to this day. Too fun.

The dudes are lucky to get to spend tons of time with their Mimi and Papa. We took my mom with us on our road trip last year and week at the beach. It was the most awesome vacation ever and I'm so glad we got to have her with us!

Grandparents are the best. I have some great memories of driving around getting all spoiled by my grandma and papa. Those are sweet memories that seem to get sweeter with time.

Grandparents with a van? Awesome. Did it have a crank for a window in the roof? I wish you would have had a camera, too!!

I grew up close {like 10 miles} from my grandparents, and while I see it as a blessing, I feel a bit cheated that I didn't get to have the fun summer trips to their home for weeks on end, like my hubby did with his.

Thankfully, my kids are about an hour away from any grandparents, and their grandfather is 12 hours away...so maybe they'll get a little taste of both worlds.

Thank you for sharing your story. The images that came to mind were so fun!
