Is another man's treasure!
That is so true!
My oldest daughter needed/wanted snow boots for Jr. High camp, and since I could not justify spending money on something she would wear for only two days, I decided that I would go to a couple of thrift stores first, to see if they had anything there.
There are two thrift stores very close to my house, and one I had been to only once before. I know that people are always finding great deals, but I had no intentions of looking for anything else besides the boots.
Until....
I stumbled upon the "houseware" section where they had shelves of China.
Normally, I would just pass on by because I have never been into anything like that. EVER. But, I remembered that my friend (the one who has the girls teas at her house) found some pieces from this same thrift store. We started looking, and I actually got excited over some of the plates, bowls, and cups! Imagine that! They were all selling for $1.99 a piece!
I'm not an expert when it comes to fine China, so I just started picking out pieces that appealed to me. I also recalled Rachel Ashwell from Shabby Chic saying that not everything has to match.
What I ended up buying was:
6 Dinner Plates (2 different designs)
6 Dessert Plates
6 Salad/Soup Bowls
1 Cup for Cream/Milk
1 Sugar Container
8 Tea Cups
Grand Total: $61!
So, check out what I got, and tell me what you think!!

This is Mikasa's Rose Mist collection.
I love it!
The dinner plate on the bottom is Carlton "Corsage" pattern, and the smaller plate is Prestige from China Garden.
And here are some random cups that I got, too. I still need to go back and get a couple of more settings. My girls were really excited, and now they can't wait to have a "formal" tea party!
My husband was SHOCKED that I was so happy about this because he knows this is/was so not me! I'm so ready to go back there and get more!
Really lovely, and a fantastic deal sweetie.
ReplyDeleteI love these!! The Mikasa is just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea that not everything has to match! It almost appeals to me more that it doesn't...
I would be ecstatically happy, too with a find like that! :)

ReplyDeleteGreat deal! I have 3 sets of dinnerware.. 3 different patterns, lol. I would like a 12 piece set so when we have a lot of people over we can all have semi-matching plates, hehe.

You scored!
ReplyDeletebeautiful. love those unexpected great deals and blessings!
ReplyDeletei have envy...i went to our local thrift store a couple of weeks ago, and everything is about $5 a piece and not nearly as nice or matching. nearly every thrift store has closed out here on Long Island. i was hoping to get the same for a tea party party for my 4yr old.
ReplyDeleteJOB WELL DONE!!! lol
ReplyDeleteThirft stores can be a shoppers best friend! You got some very pretty pieces! Congrats! :)

ReplyDeleteYou did great for a Newbie. Me...I'm a hard-core, totally addicted thrift store shopper. I go the American Cancer Society Discovery Thrift Store every Friday after work (today I found nothing, last week I found gorgeous daisy and flowery pillow cases. $2 each pair, $4.00 total spent). Then on my lunch hour because it was such a beautiful day I went to the Goodwill and found a neat Halloween Tealite decoration and two blouses and a book by Dan Brown. Total $9.75.
